Do you have a captcha on your blog for comments? What is your reason for having it turned on, or what is your reason for NOT having it turned on?

Initially I had Captcha turned off but I was getting quite a lot of company spam. Then I had a bit of drama over Facebook with this girl, which I blogged about - and, long story short - the link to my blog got posted on 4chan. Some of the 4chan trolls started flooding my blog and spamming my comments section. As fast as I was deleting them, they were coming in. It was at this point I enabled Captcha and then later set my comments to be moderated. I recently removed the Captcha as the drama has long since blown over, and I know it can often put (genuine) people off commenting - but I mean, I wouldn't hesitate to reinstate it if I felt my blog was at risk of being flooded by trolls again Do you have Captcha turned on or off on your blog?

Oh dear, is that post still up? I'm nosey/curious.
That sounds horrible having the trolls flooding your blog!
I have never really had any spam. I've had the odd comment from somebody promote a website, like 'Hi love your blog, check out our bags here' type thing, but they are very rare!
I don't have it turned on, I get a bit annoyed to be honest when I have to enter a captcha, esp if it is long, or I can't tell the letters apart. I'm dyslexic and get things mixed up a lot!
I'm not a fan of making it harder to interact on my blog, if I had problems with spam I would probably go for setting comments up for my approval first if I had spam. Captcha would be a last resort for me!
I have the same attitude with the forum really, which is why I allow guest posts and I don't have to approve members. If it became an issue with getting spam or something, I would set the security higher.

It wasn't what they were saying that bothered me - but the fact they were spamming me with the same comment multiple times was indeed rather irritating! Yeah I agree with you, Captchas are quite annoying - but I don't think I'd let it put me off leaving a comment if I really enjoyed reading a post and had something to say I did notice you allow Guest posts on here- hopefully people won't abuse that but I guess time will tell Yes, the original post ( www.mrjoiee.com/2013/11/facebook-feuding.html) and one I wrote following the shit-storm that ensued ( www.mrjoiee.com/2013/11/with-regards-to-mondays-blog-post.html) are both still up. The girl has since apologised to me and we have made peace with one another, but at the time I wrote these posts I was in a very foul mood (as is probably extremely obvious from reading them tbh haha) I really hope you don't think badly of me after reading them haha >.<

Thanks for sharing! It doesn't make me think badly of you, just that maybe you need to learn to handle certain situations better. But you are young so it will come, life experience and all that babble! It was wrong of her to call you a paedo though - that's a horrible thing to call anyone!
I find the best way to win in conflict is to not respond. It really irks them to see you are not maddened by the situation =)

It really irks them to see you are not maddened by the situation =) 1 of the things I adore most about blogging is being able to look back on posts and see a growth in myself as a person. That's why that post is still up. My favourite blogs to read are the ones that are honest, and showcase the good, the bad and the ugly of a persons life, and that's what I strive to achieve with mine. Reading it back now I can definitely agree I didn't handle it the way I probably should have. She'd been leaving sarcastic passive-aggressive comments on a few of my statuses for a while before all this kicked off and I'd always ignored it, but when I saw she'd written that status about me I just saw red and snapped to be honest! haha oops >.< Never mind - as I said, she apologised to me afterwards (which made me have a hell of a lot more respect for her) and we both managed to see the funny side of it all (thank god!! lol)

Totally! I'm glad you have learnt from your mistakes, it seems like it was more her issue more than yours if she has been leaving aggressive status's for a while. You should have left her to bask in her bitterness!
Ha.

I have it enabled. Mostly because my husband gets a ridiculous amount of spam on his blog (which is pretty much private as he doesn't promote it or even tell many friends/family about it) and I was worried I'd get even more since I am trying to get the blog out there a bit. He enabled comment moderation but I didn't want to moderate because I like the satisfaction of seeing my post when I post it (instant gratification generation haha) so the captcha was kind of my happy medium. I guess it could disuade people from commenting but usually if I've gotten to the comment form with something in mind to say I don't mind it....but I might consider changing in the future if I think it would help me get more feedback!

That's weird that you've both had issues with spam, what type of spam? I did see one blog that had a load of spam comments, just weird stuff not really relating to the blog and links to a website.
Some captchas are more annoying than others, I was on one blog the other day that 'timed' it, I write my comment, did the capture, then went to add something to the comment. By the time I had submitted a whole 30 seconds later, an error message came up saying I had taken too long and the captcha ran out!

I don't have captcha enabled; if you're worried about spam, you can always just moderate comments. Captcha are a nightmare for people with visual problems (like me!) and the audio versions are just awful.

I hear ya on the visual problems. I'm dyslexic and I really struggle with word/number order sometimes! The audio versions are TERRIFYING!
Blogger to filter some comments straight into your spam folder - does anyone get many in there?

I personally don't have mine on, I find it so annoying to have to type the codes in so much (especially if you comment a lot, like me) and a lot of my comments come from the same people. If I ended up with a spam problem, I would then just do what Angela said, moderate comments.

I turned mine off. I did get a bit of spam but then I just started moderating my comments, it's made it easier to keep track of who's saying what too. I can get quite put off by captcha, just because I'm rubbish and get them wrong over and over again!

personally, i think captcha is the worst. lol! i just turn my moderation on and go through each comment one by one. i find it more personal that way? (like reading each mail sent to you) instead of just having some kind of robot filter it out. i even go through my spam!

Yea, I agree, it's much more personal. It means I can properly read each comment x
